If you are planning your first trekking experience in Argentina, this guide will help you prepare so you can enjoy it safely, comfortably and memorably.

Choose the right trek for your level

Argentina offers routes for every level. For a first trek, look for trails that are:

Well signposted.
Low to moderate difficulty.
With moderate elevation gain.
Close to towns or organised national parks.

Ideal destinations for beginners:

El Chaltén (Santa Cruz): Laguna Capri Trail, Mirador de los Cóndores.
Bariloche (Río Negro): Circuito Chico, Cerro Campanario, trails in Llao Llao Municipal Park.
Córdoba: Los Gigantes waterfalls, Quebrada del Condorito.
Tucumán: Puerta del Cielo Trail, San Javier Reserve.
Salta and Jujuy: Short trails in the Calchaquí Valleys.

Essential gear you can’t go without

For a safe and comfortable trek, bring:

Trekking shoes or boots with good grip.
A 20–30 litre backpack.
Water bottle or hydration system (at least 1.5 litres per day of trekking).
Layered clothing (thermal base layer, warm layer, windproof jacket).
Cap or hat.
Sunscreen.

On days with strong winds or storms, it is best to reschedule your hike.

Learn about the route

No matter how easy or short the trek may seem, it is always important to research beforehand.

Total distance.
Estimated duration.
Difficulty level.
Signposting.
Whether there are toilets, refuges or water points.

It is always better to start early to avoid hiking back in the dark when you are already tired.

Stay hydrated and eat well

Don’t underestimate altitude and effort

Regions such as Cuyo and the northern provinces (NOA) are located between 2,500 and 4,000 metres above sea level.

Walk slowly.

Drink more water.
Take frequent breaks.
Listen to your body.

If you feel dizzy, have a strong headache or nausea, descend to a lower altitude.

Safety first

Let someone know where you are going and when you plan to return.
Do not take unmarked alternative paths.
Do not cross rivers if the water level is high.
Hire a local guide if the trail is complex.
Download offline maps — there is often no mobile signal.
Always follow park ranger instructions.
